Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate – Full Review

Home On-The-Go Single Door Dog Crate E430, XX-Small

The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate is a wire dog crate from the pet brand – Prevue Pet Products. But before we get into the meat of today’s review, we will first get a summary about this brand.

Prevue Pet Products is perhaps the oldest brand in the pet industry. It was actually founded in 1869 which places the brand at nearly 150 years of age.

The brand prides itself in the level of innovation, quality, and safety it brings with the introduction of each new product it launches. According to Prevue, pet products are supposed to be able to create a safe place for pets and their owners. It, therefore, makes it a point to create safe products with quality materials.

It’s worth the mention that Prevue is an active member of several professional pet associations. Some of them include the American Pet Products Manufacturing Association (APPMA), the Pet Industry Distributor Association (PIDA), and the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PJAC) just to mention a few.

Now that we know about the brand, it’s time to take an in-depth look at its Prevue Home On-The-Go Crate.

Who Is The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate For?

Despite the claims of Prevue about this crate being heavy-duty and all that, this crate is actual light construction. Many dogs will be able to make their way out of this crate without much stress. So, you want to keep the more rambunctious dogs away from this crate.

The locks? They feel kinda cheap so we are not sure this will keep your pet safely contained. But then again, it’s a triple-lock system and that should count for something, right? Well, we won’t exactly say that it does. Maybe a little bit but not much. An escape artist will still be able to make its way out of this crate.

Beisdes all of that, this crate comes in 7 sizes including extra extra small, so it has a wide selection of crates for dogs of all sizes.

Features Of The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate

1. Metal Construction

Prevue describes this crate as a heavy-duty metal construction with 10 and 12 gauge mesh. Whatever that means, it definitely does not mean that this crate is a heavy-duty unit. Not by a long shot. The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate is light construction at best.

Any dog with a decent level of energy will knock this crate down and knock it down well.

So, the security and stability that Prevue promises you with this crate are definitely not guaranteed. Treat this crate as you’d treat any regular dog crate, and don’t let any dog that hasn’t been properly crate-trained into this crate at all.

That said, this crate is coated with an anti-rust finish to make it last. Is this a big deal? Of course, you know it isn’t. Every dog crate comes with an anti-rust finish to keep it durable for as long as.

2. Single Door

In the words of Prevue, this crate comes with a large door, but we won’t exactly call this large. In fact, there was even an isolated complaint that the door hangs a little low. But since that’s not a unanimous complaint, we won’t dwell much on that.

Anyway, it comes with just one door. So, you should expect some level of inconvenience using the crate.

Now, to the locks. This is a triple-latch system which means that the crate comes with 3 latches. You’d think that three locks would make any difference. Sweetheart, it didn’t.

In fact, 3 latches seemed to be too inconvenient for some people. Most said they’d have preferred for the crate to come with a single heavy-duty latch.

Anyway, that ship has sailed. Let’s talk about the security of these locks.

Prevue describes them as heavy duty. How cute! Lol. There’s nothing heavy duty about any of the locks. They are light duty. And even though they are three in number, escape artists will still make their way out of this crate easily.

3. Foldable

The crate comes foldable with a convenient handle to move the crate around comfortably. It also helps to make the crate easy to store regardless of the space you’re working with.

You’ll also find that this sets up easily and also folds down easily as well without tools. At least all customers agree with this fact.

4. Plastic Pan Included

The Prevue Home On-The-Go Crate comes with a plastic pan which is supposed to help catch your pooch’s accidents.

It seems to be in good condition but then again, it’s still plastic, so, it might still break easily. If the metal wire isn’t so strong, we’re not sure we trust the structural integrity of the plastic pan in the crate either.

By the way, we always recommend metal pans because they are more durable and less attractive to dogs with a chewing habit.

5. Available Sizes

The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate comes in 7 sizes including an extra extra small size. The extra extra small dog crate measures at 19.25 inches which, in many cases, still qualifies as a small dog crate.

But we guess Prevue designated a separate spot for it because it carries another crate in a different size within the small dog crate size as well.

Sad thing is that this crate does not come with a dividing panel. So, you can’t exactly use this to crate-train.

For pet parents that are thinking of getting something that will grow with their pets, this won’t work. You can only get the exact size for your pet per time.

Our advice? Only get this crate for a mature adult, else you’ll keep buying up as your puppy grows. This hardly makes any sense as crates don’t come cheap.

Pros Of The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate

1. Folds easily for convenient storage and traveling.

2. 7 sizes available for all sized dogs.

Cons Of The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate

1. Crate is made from flimsy, lightweight material.

2. Latches are not exactly easy to use.

3. Latches are also cheap and flimsy, and won’t keep most dogs safely contained without any chance of escape.

4. Comes with a single door which can be a bit inconvenient to use for you and your pet.

5. Does not come with dividing panels.

More Secure Option – See The Precision Triple-Door Great Crate Elite

This crate comes with much better locks than the Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate. Now, mind you, we are not saying that this crate is 100% secure. But at least, it is much better than what you’d find on our featured product.

For one, the crate comes with a 5-point precision lock system. So, this sort of helps to keep the crate a bit beyond just moderately safe. At least, a pooch with a decent level of energy will still be kept safe in this crate unlike in the Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate.

Beyond the locks, this comes with a much higher quality of metal construction which makes it more heavy-duty and more durable.

Hard-Sided Crate Option – The Petmate Navigator For Pets

PETMATE 290272 19 by 12.7 by 11.5-Inch Navigator for Pets, Tan/Brown

The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate does not come with a divider panel. And the alternative products we’ve included so far come with the divider panels.

However, we decided to throw in this hard-sided crate because it’s one of the few plastic crates we have seen that comes with a divider panel.

Yes, this crate does come with a divider panel.

But in addition to that, this crate is quite great and also airline adaptable. Still, it is advisable that you check with the airline first before taking this for any airline travel.

It comes in different sizes as well but there’s none for a large breed, though.

What Customers Are Saying About The Prevue Home On-The-Go Dog Crate

From our observations, customers do not seem to depend on the Prevue Home On-The-Go Crate, at least, not when it comes to strength.

Nearly all customers had the same thing to say: this crate is flimsy! Flimsy crate. Flimsy locks. Just flimsy all around.

The crate can’t stand up to large, rambunctious dogs, and the locks, even though they are three in number, are not even making any difference. They are just three flimsy locks adding up to make not even a single good lock.

But besides that, many customers take solace in the fact the crate folds and sets up easily. Plus, it is lightweight enough to make travel convenient.

If we were to summarize the observations of customers for the Prevue Home on-The –Go Dog Crate, we would say this. Flimsy but easy to set up and large enough for most dogs.

Our Verdict

What do we think? We think that Prevue could have done a lot better. We mean Prevue said it themselves. They’ve been in the business for more than a hundred years. A hundred years is more than enough time for anyone to get their acts together, isn’t it?

But we’re not quite sure what happened in Prevue’s case.

This crate could have been a lot better but with such low-quality materials used which ended up translating to a flimsy crate, we are quite disappointed.

The only thing this crate has going for it is the fact that it is easy to set up and fold down.  Every other thing about the crate is just meh. So, altogether, this crate disappoints us on so many counts.
