If you’re here, it means you’re looking for a backpack for your pooch. If you want to know more about dog backpacks, why you need them, and features to look out for, check out our article here. Today, however, we will be looking at the Lifeunion Service Dog Backpack.

Let’s jump right in…

Who Can Wear The Lifeunion Service Dog Backpack?

Any and every dog. No matter what dog you have, we’re glad to tell you that he can use this dog backpack. The straps on the backpack are padded so you don’t have to worry if you have a slim dog.

One thing we always advise, though, is that you see your vet before buying this backpack, or any backpack. Only your vet, who knows your dogs’ medical history, will be able to tell you for sure whether this is healthy for your dog or not. Also, he’ll be able to tell you how much weight is too much for him to carry.

Features Of The Lifeunion Service Dog Backpack

1. Material

This backpack is made of nylon. What do we know about nylon? Well, for one, nylon is a very good water-resistant material. While the backpack will not keep your dog dry completely (simply because the backpack isn’t covering your dogs’ entire frame), it will keep whatever you have inside the backpack dry.

Now to the downsides of nylon. Nylon is not the strongest material out there. In fact, it’s very inferior when compared to the likes of “cotton canvas”. This lack of strength and toughness affects the backpack immensely because it wouldn’t hold up against the toughness of the outdoors for very long.

To cut the long story short, with nylon, durability is not 100% assured.

2. Harness + Saddlebags

Lifeunion did excellently with this feature. This backpack is formed as a result of the combination of a harness and saddlebags. The saddlebags are attached to the harness using plastic buckles to form the backpack.

This will help a lot, especially to give your dog proper rest while on the trail. If you’ve ever gone hiking with your pooch, you’ll find that to get him to rest properly, you need to remove his backpack. However, depending on the dog, this can sometimes be an uphill task.

With this feature on this backpack, you can easily attach and detach the saddlebags. This, in turn, means that you can remove the weights your dog is carrying, at any point, so that he can rest properly. And that is without having to remove the backpack and put it on all over again.

The plastic buckles that connect the saddlebags to the harness are placed on top of the backpack and are four in number, two for each saddlebag. We prefer these plastic buckles to Velcro straps any day, any time. That’s because they’re tougher and can carry much more weight.

3. Handle And Leash Attachment

They might not look like much, but these little features can make or break any backpack. The handle is positioned on top of the backpack. It resembles most human backpack handles, containing a fabric strap covered by a rubber handle.

The rubber handle covering the fabric acts as padding for the handle, making it gentler on your palms when you’re using the handle. Should you use the handle to lift your dog? Well, we honestly think that that is not such a great idea.

You have to consider the fact that using it to lift your dog for a long period of time, you’re applying too much pressure on his ribcage. That can never be a good thing. Also, no matter how well-tailored the handle is, there is still a slight chance that it can break. If it breaks when you’re still carrying your dog, your dog is sent crashing to the ground. Is that something you want to risk?

The main purpose for the handle is to control your dog when he’s really close to you, or just to carry him over an obstacle.

Speaking about controlling your dog, when he’s far from you if he’s not properly trained, he needs to be leashed.

For your dog to be leashed while he’s wearing a backpack, the backpack needs to have a leash attachment. The leash attachment on this backpack is a metallic D-ring placed at the back of the backpack.

4. Color And Sizes Available

This backpack is only available in one color- red. While that is constant, the sizes do change. The backpack is available in 3 different sizes: small, medium, and large.

Under this paragraph, you’ll find a picture containing the company’s sizing chart. Once you measure your dogs’ girth, compare the measurements you get with what is in the chart. That will help you pick the right size for your pooch.

Pros Of The Lifeunion Service Dog Backpack

1. High-Visibility

While many people might not like the fact that this backpack is only available in one color, we have to say that the one color it’s available in is good. Red is a really bright color and because of that, your dog is easier to see when it gets dark.

To add to the increased visibility of the Lifeunion Service Dog Backpack are the reflective stripes it comes with. These pieces of fabric attached to different places in the backpack, glow in the dark, making it even easier to see your pooch when it’s dark.

2. Versatility

You can use it as a harness, you can use it as a backpack. This versatility gives you flexibility. Now, you’re able to use one backpack, one price, for multiple purposes. Isn’t that great?

Cons

Sizing Is A Bit Off

Few moans came from customers who purchased this item regarding its sizing, and how they almost never got it right. Many complained that they had to try more than once to find the size with straps that fit their dogs perfectly.

What can you do about this? Well, we feel you should talk to the brand before making your purchase. Don’t just rely on the sizing chart. Get across to them, describe your dog and his measurements to them. They’ll be able to give you the right size, leaving you without worries.

We hope that helps. Tell us if it does in the comment section.

What Do People Think?

People who found the right size at the first try absolutely loved this backpack. People who found it at the second or third try? Eh, not so much.

What Do We Think?

It’s a pretty decent backpack. The only thing we fear is that it is made from nylon and nylon is not very strong. Because of that, we’re not certain how long-lasting and durable this is. However, do tell us if you’ve been using this for more than a year and how it’s been holding up.
