And a great place to begin is at the brand. Petco has been around for 50 years. It believes that if we all have healthier pets, then we will be happier. And happier people make the world a better place.
The brand claims to have aided over 400 000 pets world over with its NGO. And if that’s true, then that would be highly commendable. Now to the crate we have for today.
Who Is The Petco Premium 2-Door Dog Crate For?
This crate is advertised as a heavyweight dog crate. So, it’s meant for all kinds of dogs including the really energetic and aggressive ones.
However, we feel that this crate isn’t made for extremely energetic dog breeds or Houdini dogs. Determined dogs will definitely find their way out of this thing if they just put the effort.
Yes, it is sturdier than the average dog crate but it is still no match for aggressive dogs or escape artists.
Features Of The Petco Premium 2-Door Dog Crate
1. Metal Construction
This crate is made from heavyweight metal. To ensure that this metal lasts long, the crate comes with a baked powder coat finish. This ensures that the crate is durable.
And to make this crate look really upscale, Petco finishes the crate with a hammertone metal finish.
2. Foldable With A Handle
Even though this crate is made from heavyweight metal, it still collapses pretty easily. You can easily fold it down and use the handle to move it around conveniently as well. Plus it also sets up really easily too.
This is a common feature with most dog crates these days. So, it isn’t a super big deal. But then it’s good to know that you’ll be able to move this around when you need to. It makes a great travel crate.
And yeah, setting this up does not require much time or any tool. So, it’s convenient. It’s practically like get this out of the box, set up in less than a minute and bam! Record time!
3. Double Doors
We have reviewed the Petco Classic Dog Crates and those come with single doors. We guess Petco decided to make those for people on a budget. And then decided on this as the premium version for those who can afford to play the little extra for convenience.
Extra doors are always a big advantage for us because of the extra convenience. You can place the crate almost anywhere. And taking things in and out of the crate wouldn’t be too inconvenient and awkward. Double doors for the win!
4. Dividing Panels Included
This crate comes with dividing panels just like every other metal dog crate these days. These panels are super important as they help you to manage your growing pup and his crate till they become a perfect match.
5. All Sizes Available
This crate comes in all sizes for all sizes of dog breeds. There is the extra small, small, medium, large, extra-large, and extra extra large. So, you’ll most likely find a dog crate in your dog’s size.
Pros Of The Petco Premium 2-Door Dog Crate
1. Really sturdy and durable crate.
2. Comes with double doors so it makes the crate really convenient to use for placement and access.
3. There are all sizes available for this crate, so, all dog breeds will find a home in one of these crates.
4. Sets up super easily in record time and without the need for tools.
5. Very affordable.
6. The pan locks into the crate so that pee does not spill onto your carpet. Some customers have complained that the pan moves but the problem is probably that they didn’t lock it in properly.
7. This crate is spacious and roomy.
Cons Of The Precision Petco Premium 2-Door Dog Crate
1. Again, this is a crate with sharp edges here and there. We are no longer surprised at this anymore but a pleasant surprise here and there from manufacturers would be nice. As a reference point, Petmate did a decent job on the Precision Pet Petmate ProValu Wire Dog Crate.
2. Now, this is touted as heavyweight but a determined dog will knock this down with persistent hitting.
3. This isn’t the most secure dog crate around. The latches are so easy to open. A dog actually used his tongue to open his crate once. His tongue!
4. Now, the door itself too isn’t strong too either. And yes, that’s different from the latches.
Alternative Option To The Precision Petco Premium 2-Door Dog Crate
More Affordable Option- The Petco Classic 1-Door Dog Crates
Of course, there’s always a more affordable crate for everyone. We will do all we can to bring such options to you because we don’t want money to get in the way of your responsibility to your pet.
So, we present to you the Pet Classic 1-Door Dog Crates. Of course this is a commonsensical option as the Petco Premium is the upgrade to the Petco Classic. So, if the upgrade is a bit too much for now, you can step down a bit and go for the Classic instead.
This is made of metal but the metal isn’t as heavyweight as the one on the Petco Premium. Also, from the name you can see that this crate comes with just one door. Sorry love, but you’ve got to make do and make this work.
But besides this, the Petco Classic 1-Door Dog Crate is pretty good, comes in various sizes and has received a plethora of positive reviews.
More High-End Option- Orvis Collapsible Dog Travel Crate
The Orvis Collapsible Dog Travel Crate is a high-end dog crate for pet parents with high-end tastes. This crate is the bomb diggity! It is a soft sided dog crate and it is really sturdy. In fact, Orvis describes this as a very sturdy unit and you can even drop all kinds of heavy items on it in your trunk and it won’t budge.
This crate comes with 3 doors which are large and easy to open. Of course, one of those doors is on the top of the crate. And the other doors open like a garage door.
Because it’s made for travel, Orvis designed this crate to be readily usable in your vehicle. And this crate comes prepared. All the corners are rounded so that your vehicle isn’t scratched or such.
Finally, for portability, this comes with wheels and a handle to go with it. If you’ve got the little extra, then this crate makes a worthy choice.
Something For Rambunctious Dogs- BestPet Hammmigrid Heavy Duty Dog Crate
Now if you need something that’s really heavy-duty for the really aggressive dogs, this is the crate for you. This isn’t made from metal wire like the average metal dog crate you find. It comes with heavyweight steel bars that are a half-inch thick. Plus, the latch is also really secure.
And though this doesn’t fold down, it comes with wheels. So, you’ll be able to move this unit around pretty easily. And for safety, two of the wheels are lockable. You don’t want your pet riding himself to his own danger. Neither do you want your kids doing the honors.
Plastic Option- Remington Ruff Maxx Kennel
Some dogs prefer a cozy unit to an open air metal dog crate. For such dogs, a plastic dog crate makes a fantastic choice. And we know just the one. Check out the Remington Ruff Maxx Kennel. It’s made from very high quality plastic and so it is durable.
Plastic dog crates are for house trained pets so it’s best not to give this to your dog if you both haven’t worked together on your crate training. It is also very easy to setup and works great for airline travel as well.

What Customers Are Saying About The Petco Premium 2-Door Dog Crate
Generally, customers love this crate because they have found them to be exceptionally sturdy and durable. Also, they set up really easily and collapse as easily too.
A lot of pet owners did complain about that the plastic tray shifts around a bit. But the problem is actually with them not the crate. If you lock in the tray properly onto the crate, it will stay in place and won’t shift.
Well, either way we still don’t like the plastic tray because it’s not as strong as the metal trays.
And then another thing that most customers noticed was with the latch system. In fact, there was a dog who used his tongue to work the latch until it opened.
Besides that, customers were pretty satisfied with the brand too. The crate shipped quickly. Customer service was topnotch and the crate came in pretty large and spacious.
This crate is great, and we’ve already listed all its pros. However, there are some places where Petco could have done a much better job.
For instance, for a crate that’s supposed to be thicker than the average dog crate, we don’t see how it’s any different from the regular wire dog crate in strength.
The locks are practically useless. We’re sorry if that sounded harsh, but it’s the truth. If a dog could undo the lock with his tongue, then how is it supposed to keep your pet safe?
But besides that, a few sharp corners here and there, and the plastic pan, this crate is pretty good. It’s strong and sturdy. But still, as we advised, only keep this for well-behaved pets. And reinforce the locks.
