With products like the PetSafe Martingale Collar, one could hardly guess that PetSafe has been around for only 27 years.
Apparently, 27 years is enough time to produce enough quality pet products to make your name a household one.
It could be because PetSafe strives to be trustworthy and genuine or because it insists on pushing out only products it considers quality enough.
Whatever the case, PetSafe is one pet company that really holds its own in the pet industry.
And just like its creator, the PetSafe Martingale Collar holds its own among other collars. Aside all the pluses which we will discuss later, this collar is a training collar that is designed to be worn daily.
Since you’ve not come here to chat with us but to know more about the collar under review, we won’t keep you waiting any longer. So…
Who Can Wear The PetSafe Martingale Collar?
This collar can be worn by any dog. There are sizes, ranging from petite to large so you won’t have any trouble finding one for your dog.
Also, the material of which it is made ensures that it doesn’t irritate the skin. So even if your dog has skin allergies, he should be fine with this collar.
Features Of The PetSafe Martingale Collar
The PetSafe Martingale Collar is made of nylon and this nylon is durable. Now, because this collar will be pulled on quite frequently, PetSafe made it able to withstand all the pulling.
This nylon collar is strong enough to withstand the pressure from anxious dogs without snapping in defeat.
At the same time, it is soft enough that it does not hurt your dog.
This collar comes in different colors but is without decorative designs. It is properly sticthed with the edges well smoothened so that they do not constitute a nuisance.
3. The Loops
Now, there are two loops on the PetSafe Martingale Collar. The bigger one is supposed to fit around your dog’s neck and you adjust it using the tri glide. However, the smaller one cannot be adjusted.
Here is how the whole thing works. The small loop is what actually constricts when you pull or it is pulled on.
Now remember that you cannot adjust that. So what you want to do is measure your dog’s neck before you buy so that you can get the perfect (or close to perfect) fit for your dog.
So that the collar does not end up being too loose or too tight.
That said, you want to be careful that, in the state of rest, the collar is tight enough that your dog can’t get out of it and loose enough that your dog is not choking.
You also want to be careful that, when pulled, the collar is tight enough that it can serve as an effective deterrent and loose enough that your dog isn’t choking.
Bottom line, your dog shouldn’t be choking in any state.
4. Clasp, D Ring And ID tag
This collar has no clasp which is something you want to consider when adjusting the collar.
Whatever you do, make sure it can pass through your dog’s head. However, you might have to adjust before and after putting the collar on your dog if his head is significantly larger than his neck.
There is a metal D ring on the outside of the small loop for you to attach the leash. The D Ring is not where you hang the ID tag.
There is a plastic ring close to the D Ring where you are supposed to hang the tag. Hanging the tag on the D Ring might be pointless because it could just end up getting hidden by the leash.
Is The PetSafe Martingale Collar Easy To Use?
Pretty much. No technicalities.
However, some people might think it too much of a hassle because it doesn’t have a buckle (the rhyme!). But though that could be a hassle, it isn’t exactly a difficulty.
Pros Of The PetSafe Martingale Collar
1. No Slip
By no slip we refer to the fact that dogs that wear this collar cannot slip out of it. The PetSafe Martingale Collar doesn’t afford them that opportunity.
So you can be sure that you are always in control when you take your dog on walks. And you assert this control without being mean about it.
It is made of tough nylon. So that while being soft and easy on the neck, the collar can still last long despite all the pulling and handling.
The PetSafe Martingale Collar is basically a training collar but it could also be used as a regular collar.
It has a D Ring to attach a leash to, has provision for an ID card and doesn’t use pain to correct bad behavior. It can very comfortably pass for a regular collar.
Cons Of The PetSafe Martingale Collar
The collar doesn’t look like much. This might not seem like a con to everybody. But there are some that would very much like for their dog’s collar to have a bit of pop to it.
However, the different colors should compensate for that.
Another small thing is that the plastic ring for the collar might break quicker than you want. However if that happens, you could attach the tag to one of those metal things that join the loops together.
Alternatives To The PetSafe Martingale Collar
Option With Designs — PetSafe Fido Finery Martingale Collar
The PetSafe Fido Finery Martingale Collar is basically the same as the PetSafe Martingale Collar. The only major difference between the two is that this one has some designs on it. OK, plus it is a bit pricier.
So for dog parents who wouldn’t mind spending a bit more money to get a collar with designs, you could try this one.
Higher End Option — PetSafe Quick Snap Martingale Collar
This collar by PetSafe is also basically the same as the featured product. However, aside the fact that this collar is a tiny little bit pricier than the PetSafe Martingale Collar, it has a buckle.
So if you feel a buckle makes a collar easier to operate and of course you have the money to spare, consider getting this collar.
Opposite Spectrum — Guardian Gear Martingale Dog Collar
Now this collar is kinda different. Unlike the other collars in this review, the small loop of the Guardian Gear Martingale Dog Collar is made of metal.
Because that small loop is a metal chain, the collar clenches and unclenches pretty quickly. It is generally easier for metal to glide along than it is for nylon.
