Beef
At the beginning of this article, we mentioned that this meal is high in protein and having beef as the first ingredient is definitely a good sign.
When you buy food for your dog, we are sure you already know to look through the ingredients to know what your dog should or should not be having. However, did you know that the ingredient list could also tell you which ingredients were used more than the others?
Here is how things work. Ingredients listed in pet food are usually arranged in descending order of how much was used. So, the first ingredient you see was used in more quantity than the next and the last ingredient was used in less quantity than the one before it.
That said, the reason we like that this has beef as its primary ingredient is that beef is animal-based protein. Animal-based protein is a better protein source than plant protein because the latter does not offer all the different kinds of amino acids that are needed by your dog. Plant proteins always have to be backed up (heavily) by animal protein.
That said, animal protein also needs backup from other animal-based protein sources. This is not because a piece of meat cannot offer your dog all the different kinds of amino acids he needs but because it does not offer enough.
The reason is animal protein actually has a higher water content than any other nutrient. We are looking at between 60 and 70 percent water content. Leaving between 40 and 30 percent to be shared by protein (predominantly) and a number of other nutrients. So, there really needs to be that backup.
Beef Broth
Basically, beef broth is not added for any nutritional value since it has none. Manufacturers just add beef broth to canned dog foods for its water content and palatability.

Chicken Liver
Much like the other parts of a chicken, chicken liver is rich in protein which automatically adds to the protein count in this meal. In fact, the chicken liver might even have less water content than the rest of a chicken.
Anyway, in addition to protein, chicken liver brings with it a number of minerals including choline and manganese and a number of vitamins including Vitamin A and some B vitamins.
We should probably let you know that there have been some controversies about how best to serve a dog chicken liver; cooked or raw. Those that argue for raw say that it is what dogs originally ate while those that argue for cooked say that raw foods are a petri dish of germs.
Whatever the case, though, because we are looking at processed food, you already know that the chicken liver used is cooked.
Chicken
Things are really looking up for the this food on review. This is the third animal-based protein we’ve seen in 5 ingredients and we are here for that.
There isn’t as much chicken as there is beef and the basic idea is to imitate closely a wolf’s diet. And wolves are more likely to find beef out in the wild than chicken.
Dried Egg Product
Still on the animal-based protein, dried egg product is basically dehydrated egg; the whole egg without the shells, that is. Dried egg product is basically egg with a lot less water content so, there is no need being uncomfortable with that.
That said, with the water greatly reduced, one can be sure that the quantity used is really representative of the amount of nutrients the eater will be getting from it.
Peas
Peas are usually regarded as a quality addition to a dog’s meal. And this is because peas are rich in a number of different nutrients.
For one, peas are one of the plant-based protein sources. And while they cannot serve as a standalone source for dogs, they do contribute a significant amount of protein and will definitely affect the protein count in any meal.
Furthermore, peas contain some amount of dietary fiber (which is the good kind) and carbohydrates. They also contain little quantities of vitamins including Vitamin K.

Potatoes
In this meal, potatoes are the primary source of energy. It is very common to find potatoes in grain-free foods and that is not only because potatoes are a healthier option but also because potatoes are more affordable than other healthier carb options.
