Beef
First off, it is safer to go with meals like this that specify what kind of meat is used. Those whose ingredient lists contain some ambiguous things like ‘meat’ or ‘poultry’ usually have something to hide. So, they are a ‘be wary’.
That said, ingredients listed on a dog food pack are usually listed in descending order of how much is used; that is, the first ingredient you see was used the most and the last ingredient used was the ingredient used the least.
So, there is more to checking the ingredient list than just ascertaining what ingredients were used. You actually want to know which ingredients were used more. Why? Let’s look at protein.
There are basically two kinds of protein; the animal-based kind and the plant-based kind. The plant-based kind does not contain all the amino acids that dogs need but the animal based kind does.

This is why we like the fact that beef is the first thing we see on the list. That said, with meals that have meat as their first ingredient, you’ll have to make sure that there are other animal-based protein sources to augment this.
This is because beef is actually composed of more water than protein. So, by the time the water is taken out of it, the protein quantity won’t be equal to the amount of beef used. Let’s get on with the other ingredients.
Beef Broth
While beef broth could contain certain nutrients including collagen and some amino acids (especially the bone-based kind), it is usually added to wet dog food for the palatability.

Turkey
Like beef, turkey has a high water content. However, the water content in turkey is not as high as what you have in beef. That said, turkey is a pretty good source of protein that augments the beef that has already been added.

Beef Liver
Because beef liver does not have as high a water content as the rest of the beef, it offers a higher concentration of nutrients than the rest of the beef. So, adding beef liver to dog food is a good way of beefing up (pun intended) the protein content (and a number of other nutrients) of this meal.
Some of the other nutrients that beef liver offers include fat, vitamin A, iron, phosphorus, zinc and even copper.
Potatoes
You’ll find potatoes as one of the ingredients of a lot of grain-free dog foods. And aside the fact that potatoes contain a healthy amount of carbohydrates, they are pretty affordable which is good news for the commercial food producers.
That said, you’ll need to bear in mind that potatoes are a source of the complex kind of carbohydrates which dogs do not digest quickly. As a result, you’ll have to be careful that the potatoes do not appear high up the ingredient list. In our opinion, where it appears on this list is alright.
That said, potatoes actually bring more than the complex carbohydrates. They happen to be a good source of potassium which helps with blood pressure and to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Pea Flour
Pea flour is one of the controversial ingredients in this mea but let’s backtrack a little. When roasted peas are milled, the powder that is got is what is referred to as pea flour.
Now, dog food manufacturers usually add pea flour as a filler; that is, something that boosts the nutrient count in a meal. Some people are not happy about this, though, as they see it as cheap and something that dogs can live without.
In our opinion, seeing as peas are not something that would have been in your dog’s original diet, it is better for your dog to take them in small quantities; whether we are referring to the peas themselves, or their byproducts. And seeing as the pea flour isn’t one of the first five ingredients, we think things are good.
Lamb
Having lamb in the mix is certainly a good idea because some dogs might have developed a distaste for the conventional beef, chicken and turkey just because they’ve eaten those too much.
So, in addition to augmenting the protein content, the lamb could also help entice your dog to take more bites out of his food.

Flaxseeds
For a plant protein source, flaxseeds are really impressive. They pack a lot of protein in such a small helping which makes them a really good backup for a high-protein diet. We say backup because flaxseeds lack certain amino acids that can only be got from animal protein sources.
That said, in addition to the protein they bring, flaxseeds actually pack some other ingredients including fats and both the Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

Carrageenan
