What Dog Has The Strongest Dog Bite Force?

strongest dog bite

Although dogs are best known as man’s best friend, this does not automatically change their DNA. They are still animals and yes, they can still bite. So, as we answer the question of the strongest dog bite, keep in mind that dog bite cases are more common than you think.

If the statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is anything to go by, about 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs annually. Of that number, about half are children aged 5 to 9 years.

Interestingly, people are more likely to be bitten by a familiar dog than by a stray dog. One out of five of such cases, such bites would result in an injury requiring medical attention. That possibility significantly increases if the victim is a child.

Naturally, how much damage a dog can cause by his bite would be determined by just how powerful a bite he can give. This, in turn, is determined by a number of other factors including the physique of the dog, especially around the head.

This is why the largest dogs give the strongest dog bites.

The strength of a dog’s bite (a  key determinant of a dog’s total physical strength) can be scientifically measured in Pounds per Square Inch (PSI). This is why it is possible to rank dogs in order of their bite strengths like has been done already.

But before we get to the list, let’s get a better understanding of this PSI.

What Is PSI?

PSI or Pounds per Square Inch is the unit by which the strength of a dog’s bite is measured. Basically, what the PSI measures is the reaction of every pressure a dog applies over a square inch of a pound. Generally, a dog’s PSI remains the same. However, this force sometimes varies slightly depending on prevailing conditions. Some causes for variation in PSI might be the mood the dog is in at the time, what the dog is biting, and the dog themselves.

What Is The Bite Force Of The Average Dog?

An average dog will have a bite force about twice that of a human at about 230 to 250 PSI. A human, on the other hand, can only achieve an average of 120 – 140 PSI while a croc has an unbelievable 5000 PSI. Now, this does not mean that the average dog will always bite at 230 – 250 PSI, that is, at their full strength. It’s a little more complex than that. Generally, dogs don’t even ever bite at full strength except it was due to provocation.

Which Dog Has A Bite Force Of 2000 PSI?

Please disregard any information that tells you that any dog has a bite force of about 2000 PSI. No dog can bite that hard. That’s simply ridiculous as it would mean that said dog bites stronger than a mature adult hippopotamus.

But then again, we can understand the confusion of such people. They probably were working with the results of a particular research done by Ellis et al. or Linder et al. In both cases, the results were released in Newton which accounts for why values were within the corridors of thousands.

In actuality, the strongest dog bite comes in at only about a third of 2000 PSI which is about 700 PSI. What dog is that? We will get to that in a bit.

Rest assured though, the top three dogs that terrify people the most don’t even come close to that in bite strength.

The Rottweiler comes in at 328 PSI, followed by the German Shepherd at 238, and the American Pitbull Terrier at 235 PSI. So, as you can see, it’s still within the average. This does not mean, though, that such bites are not dangerous. They definitely are.

Can A Dog’s Bite Crush Your Bones?

The dog with the strongest bite force, even though it does not hold a candle to the croc’s 5000 PSI, can still very well crush some bones.

Talking about crushing bones, are your dog’s teeth beginning to show some wear and tear? Then you’re probably not paying enough attention to his dentition. Click here for a complete guide to dog dental care.

With that said, we present to you a countdown of the top ten dogs with the strongest bite force.

With proper training, Tosa Inus can become a great pet for the family. However, they do require a lot of food to keep up with all that energy they dispense. They also require a lot of space as well.
