ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar — Extensive Review

ROGZ Reflective Nylon Choke Collar; Slip Show Obedience Training Gentle Choker for Large Dogs, Pink

ROGZ is a pet company that seems to specialize in the production of dog products. Its lineup of products includes everything from dog toys and dog food bowls to dog harnesses, and collars. The ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar is just one out of its lineup of collars.

About the collar, it is vital to mention that this collar is a martingale collar. A martingale is usually used to train dogs. The idea is for the collar to tighten when pressure is applied and to loosen when the pressure is removed.

We have a detailed article on training collars so we think it would be in your best interest to check it out. Now, back to our review.

Who Is The ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar For?

The ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar is meant to be used on dogs that are getting trained. It is not to be used on a regular basis. Additionally, this collar is meant for large dogs whose necks measure between 16 and 22 inches. So, if your dog is a small or medium-sized dog, you’d have to find another training collar.

What Are The Features Of The ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar?

The following are the features of the ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar:

  • Strong, nylon material.
  • Available in 10 different colors.
  • Two D rings.
  • Tri-glide for adjustment and fitting.

1. Material

This collar is made of strong nylon. Contrary to what you might think, it’s actually pretty durable. For a martingale, this should be good news because there will definitely be quite a bit of pulling as your dog learns what is and what isn’t acceptable.

The material is also pretty soft and comfy. Now aside from all that, the collar is reflective which means you can use it to make your dog visible as you train him in the dark or in dim light.

Also, this dog collar comes in a variety of colors. About 10 different colors actually.

Now all these material features we’ve been talking about are actually regarding the main collar. There are usually two sides to a martingale collar; the side that goes around the neck and a smaller loop that causes the tightening and loosening.

Some martingales are made of the same material all through while some others are made of two different materials. This collar happens to fall under the second category.

The small loop is made of metal that was carefully coated to make it rust-resistant. We think that using metal for the small loop is actually a good idea. This is because metal tends to slide along easier than cloth. This makes for quicker tightening and loosening.

2. Rings And Tri Glide

On a regular collar, there would be just one D Ring and that D Ring would be what you would attach the leash to. However, on this collar, there are two D Rings. The D Rings are used to attach the metal loop to the main collar.

What you attach the leash to is an O ring which you will find at the edge of the loop. It is from that O ring that you control the collar. You pull on it when you need your dog to behave and so it tightens. Then you release it when you’re done and so it loosens.

The tri-glide is used to adjust the collar to fit well. Now, seeing as there is no clasp on this collar, you should adjust the collar in such a way that it passes through your dog’s head. And then adjust it again when it is past his head if need be.

You should know, however, that the tri-glide is only responsible for how the collar fits when the loop is relaxed. It does not affect how tight the collar will be when the loop is tightened. The length of the loop is responsible for this and it is not adjustable.

So in determining the right size for your dog, you should be sure that the loop is long enough that the collar isn’t too tight when it is pulled on. The idea is to send a warning to your dog and not to choke him.

What Are The Benefits Of The ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar?

The following are advantages of the ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar that make it a great buy.

  • It’s reflective which makes it great for night use.
  • Nylon webbing and coated metal parts make this collar durable.
  • The collar is super easy to use.

1. Reflective

We think it is a good thing that this collar is reflective. This is because there are times when the night is the only time you have to train your dog. At those times, you’ll need a collar like this that can double as a reflective collar and a training collar.

2. Durable

It’s pretty durable. From the main collar which is made of nylon webbing to the martingale loop which is made of coated metal.

3. Functional

The martingale loop on the collar glides along easily. So, when it is released, it loosens immediately. Thereby, removing the possibility of your dog choking accidentally. That’s a plus if there ever was one.

What Are The Cons Of the ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar?

One con of the ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar is that its sizing could be quite tricky. Some collars are not exactly the sizes written on them. So we think it is a good idea for you to order about two sizes up. Remember to pay attention to the martingale loop when trying to determine the right size for your dog.

The Single Chain Martingale Dog Collar works in pretty much the same way that the other collars here work. This collar falls into the category of collars whose entire parts are made of the same material.

However, this collar is different from our featured collar and indeed other collars here. The reason is that the entire collar is made of steel coated in chrome.

So if you are interested in getting a purely metal martingale for your dog, this collar should be a good enough choice. Plus, it is not as pricey as our featured product.

ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar — FAQs

Is The ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar Good?

The ROGZ Obedience Half-Check Dog Collar is a great buy. It is an easy-to-use martingale collar made from strong, durable materials. It is also reflective which makes it usable to use in poorly lit environments. Customers who have bought this collar mostly have glowing commendations about the collar. It’s definitely a purchase that’s every bit worth the money.

What Is A Half-Check Dog Collar?

A half-check collar is a type of dog collar that sort of resembles a martingale collar. When pressure is added to this collar, a half-check collar will tighten up to a certain limit. It is a collar popularly used for dog training and considered less cruel than other collars like pinch and prong collars.

Is A Half-Check Collar The Same As A Martingale Collar?

A half-check collar is similar to a martingale collar but they are not the same. One difference between both is that the half-check collar is typically made of two parts that differ in material. One part is usually made of leather or nylon webbing and the other part is made of metal. Martingale collars, on the other hand, have two loops made of the same material, usually nylon webbing. Both are, however, more humane variations of choke collars made for dogs with heads larger than their necks.

How Tight Should A Half-Check Collar Be?

Usually, you should fit a half-check collar the same way you’d fit a regular, flat collar. That is, when you fasten the collar and both rings meet on your dog’s neck, they should fit in such a way that there’s room for two of your fingers to fit into the space between the collar and your dog’s neck.

How Does A Half-Check Collar Work?

A half-check collar works by tightening a bit to a snug fit on your dog’s neck when he pulls on his leash. Once fitted correctly, half-check collars never tighten to the point of strangulation. They are also painless too. If your dog is a puller, a half-check collar or a martingale collar is a better collar than a conventional, flat collar. If your dog pulls too hard with a flat collar, the collar could tighten to the point of hurting his windpipe which is why a half-check collar is safer.

Plus, the noise from the metal links on a half-check collar naturally annoys dogs which further helps to keep them in line.

Are Half-Check Collars Cruel?

Different schools of thought have their opinion on whether or not half-check collars are cruel. However, the general consensus is that half-check collars are a more humane version of choke, pinch, and prong collars. Some people still argue that half-check collars are cruel all the same but it is, generally, a more acceptable training collar for large dogs than other types of collars.
