If you have a pooch that is constantly bedeviled by gastroenteritis or dermatitis as a result of allergies, then you are understandably worried. Well, Purina has a range of solutions which might just be the thing that your dog needs – the Purina Sensitive Systems Dog Food.
Food allergies in dogs are widely varied and not all dogs are allergic to the same food ingredients. Usually, offending ingredients are the animal protein sources in the diet which could be anything from chicken to lamb to fish.
Because of how popular the use of chicken is in the making of pet food, chicken is probably the ingredient with the highest case of intolerance in dogs. To take care of this, pet food makers make their hypoallergenic foods with other protein sources or, at least, hydrolyzed chicken.
To cater to your pooch’s food insensitivity, Purina has a wide range of dog foods made with lamb, fish, turkey, and other non-meat protein sources. It also carries prescription dog foods as well for dogs with food sensitivities as well.
Overall, we consider Purina Sensitive Systems line an average line of products at best. You’d find that there are many ingredients used by Purina in this line that don’t sit well with many researchers and pet care experts.
Even with the veterinary diets where we expected a little more level of care, we still observed the inclusion of questionable ingredients.
However, we will leave you to make your decision. Here is a list of Purina’s top 12 best sensitive systems dog food from our findings.

Top 12 Purina Sensitive Systems Dog Foods
Purina ONE SmartBlend Sensitive Systems Adult Formula Dry Dog Food
Purina offers many product lines when it comes to its dog food.
The Purina ONE SmartBlend Sensitive Systems Adult Formula Dry Dog Food belongs to the Purina ONE line.
There is another line for sensitive system dog which is the Purina Pro Plan but there isn’t a lot of difference between the two lines.
The Purina ONE SmartBlend Sensitive Systems Adult Formula Dry Dog Food has salmon as its first ingredient. So, if your dog is allergic to the more common sources of protein, as long as they aren’t allergic to fish, this would do.
By the way, this food is protein-packed even though only a few are sourced from animals. It’s affordable though.
Purina Pro Plan Focus Small Breed Adult Sensitive Skin And Stomach Formula Dry Dog Food
You can already tell from the name of this product that this is a product for small breeds. It’s only for dogs that are 20 pounds or smaller. However, such dogs must be adults.
You must be careful to ensure that you don’t feed this a puppy just because it’s for small breeds. This is for adult small breeds only.
In this food, salmon is also the first ingredient just as in the Purina ONE SmartBlend Sensitive Systems Adult Dry Dog Food. This food also contains grain like barley, rice, and oatmeal. So, you can take that as a small caveat in case you’re averse to feeding your dog grain.
Purina Pro Plan Focus Adult Sensitive Skin And Stomach Lamb And Oatmeal Formula Dry Dog Food
Another product in the pro plan line, the Purina Pro Plan Focus Adult Sensitive Skin and Stomach Lamb and Oatmeal Formula Dry Dog Food is another bestselling food for sensitive systems from Purina.
Now, in the case of this product, the first product here is lamb which is a less common protein source. We really love that this product contains a lot of animal proteins including fish meal, and animal fat.
But then again, it also contains brewers rice (mostly cheap filler), and dried egg product which are iffy additions, in our opinion. But then again, it’s quite affordable and seems to work for most dogs who were started on this diet.
Purina Pro Plan Select Adult Classic Sensitive Skin And Stomach And Rice Entrée Canned Dog Food
The Purina Pro Plan Select Adult Classic Sensitive Skin and Stomach and Rice Entrée Canned Dog Food is the first canned food variety on our list today. This one comes with salmon and rice and is pretty much the canned variety of the Purina ONE SmartBlend Sensitive Systems Adult Formula Dry Dog Food.
This product comes with salmon, fish, and even contains carrots as well.
The fact that this is canned dog food, there is a higher concentration of fatty acids and proteins which are important for two reasons. One, it is tastier which increases appetite in dogs. Two, fatty acids are important for fixing dermatitis in dogs.
Purina Pro Plan Savor Adult Grain-Free Classic Turkey Potato Entrée Canned Dog Food
We know that many dog parents are jumping in on the no-grain trend. So, if you’re one of those, you might want to check out the Purina Pro Plan Savor Adult Grain-Free Classic Turkey Potato Entrée Canned Dog Food.
This is canned dog food with a less common first ingredient – turkey. So, if your dog is averse to chicken but okay with turkey, this is a great idea.
We also really like that there is enough meat in here. Turkey, liver (100% nutritious), chicken, and meat by-products which we mentioned last because anonymous meat is not great.
But here’s a mighty problem though, this contains carrageenan. Carrageenan is a toxic ingredient used as a thickener and usually advised against but it is contained in this particular food which is bad.
Purina Pro Plan Focus Adult Sensitive Skin And Stomach Salmon And Rice Formula Dry Dog Food
This is the pro plan version of the Purina ONE SmartBlend.
It also contains salmon and rice which are excellent ingredients.
There’s salmon which is a great choice as a less common ingredient, and, therefore, less likely to trigger an untoward reaction in dogs.
Then there’s rice which is gentler on the stomach which helps to relieve symptoms of gastroenteritis brought on by food intolerance.
Other ingredients in this food include barley which is a really nutritious whole grain but grain nonetheless. So, if you don’t want your dog eating grain, especially if they are allergic to it, maybe find something else.
There are many animal-protein sources in this food which is a huge score one for us with it. There is salmon, salmon meal, fish meal, and animal fat which form a great source of essential amino acids for your dog’s development.
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Gentle Snackers Hydrolyzed Dog Treats
In addition to all the dog food for sensitive systems, Purina also offers some prescription diets also for dogs with food sensitivities.
This particular product, the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Gentle Snackers Hydrolyzed Dog Treats is not really food as you can see. They are treats.
This product contains just one carbohydrate source in order to reduce the risk of introducing allergens which could trigger symptoms of food intolerance.
The Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Gentle Snackers Hydrolyzed Dog Treats are a great reward for puppies with conditions that make it unhealthy for them to take regular treats. Such conditions could include pancreatitis, food intolerance, as well as inflammatory bowel disease.
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Formula Canned Dog Food
The Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Formula Canned Dog Food is another prescription diet from Purina also for sensitive systems.
This meal is designed for adult dogs and comes with pretty good ingredients like barley, rice, liver, chicken, guar gum, inulin, and the likes.
The mention of an anonymous meat is a bit unsettling since that’s usually characteristic of low-quality dog food which obtain their meat from questionable sources including dead and euthanized animals.
Another questionable ingredient here is soy which is considered unhealthy and even toxic for consumption.
Altogether though, the food still gets recommendations from many vets and many users testify to the potency of the diet with healthier dogs.
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed Formula Dry Dog Food
The Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed Formula Dry Dog Food contains the word “hydrolyzed.” This tells you that the food contains a hydrolyzed protein source.
Hydrolysis simply breaks the protein which is usually the offending allergen into component parts. By doing this, the protein can be safely introduced and even if your dog usually reacts to the ingredient, their immune system can no longer recognize it. This way, it can’t trigger a negative reaction.
In the case of this product, the hydrolyzed protein is obtained from soy. For reasons you’ll find out about in the article, we are quite uncomfortable with this ingredient.
It has a good rating among customers and dog owners though and vets seem to like the product too. Interested?
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Formula Dry Dog Food
We might not have mentioned this so far but for all prescription food products here (and everywhere else), you’ll be needing a vet’s prescription to make a purchase.
So, before you click the link to get any of these products, ensure you have your vet’s authorization ready. Both platforms have the process for that.
So, what’s in here? There are pretty good ingredients here like coconut oil, corn gluten meal (does not actually contain gluten), wheat bran, animal digest, chicken meal, and calcium carbonate.
But there are also ingredients which we do not really approve of here like brewers rice, and corn which isn’t totally terrible but not the best ingredient for dog food.
So, might this be the solution to your dog’s sensitivity issues?
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed Formula Chicken Flavor Dry Dog Food
The Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA Hydrolyzed Formula Chicken Flavor Dry Dog Food. Many dogs love chicken but we understand that chicken is responsible for most of the cases of food sensitivity we observe in dogs.
However, if your dog is one of those few who don’t mind chicken, this might be a good try. The ingredient list contains hydrolyzed soy protein isolate, hydrolyzed chicken liver, coconut oil, guar gum.
In our opinion, there are many cheap ingredients here, (you can get the full gist in the full review) but then again, it still got pretty good reviews across board.

Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Fiber Balance Formula Dry Dog Food
The Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Fiber Balance Formula Dry Dog Food is another special diet for dogs with sensitive digestion. This one is called the fiber balance because it contains a special fiber blend which includes soluble fiber.
Purina has designed this food with a high carb but moderate fat content for good nourishment. In here, you find whole grain corn, poultry by-product, corn gluten meal, animal digest, fish oil, wheat bran, etc.
Altogether, this is a pretty good product. It still contains a few unnamed ingredients like you find in low quality food products, but that seems to be something to be expected with Purina products, right?
In conclusion, the Purina Sensitive Systems Dog Food are quite average but about the most affordable dog foods you can find for sensitive digestion.
When it comes to their prescription diets though, Purina tends to hike prices up to 3 times higher and many customers have attested to finding it hard to keep up.
Altogether though, between its prescription and non-prescription foods, we can’t tell which works better. However, the non-prescription seems to sell better than the prescription foods. Reasons for that are obvious.
In our opinion, even though both groups (prescription and non-prescription) fail to meet the mark for us, we feel we might be more comfortable with the non-prescription foods. Why? If both groups are average why spend more for any?
Except for the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Fiber Balance Formula Dry Dog Food. We think Purina is up to something with that product. It’s probably our top choice of all the foods in Purina’s Sensitive Systems lineup.
