PetTech Dog Training Collar — Indepth Review

PetTech PT0Z1 Premium Dog Training Shock Collar, Fully Waterproof, 1200ft Range

The PetTech Dog Training Collar is a product of the PetTech brand. It basically produces dog training collars of different kinds and that can cover different distance ranges.

One thing to note about the PetTech brand is that all its products come with a lifetime guarantee. This is a serious commitment for any brand to take up if you ask us.

Anyway, we’ll be sticking with just the PetTech Dog Training Collar in this review. You should check out these articles on dog training collars and dog shock collars so that you’ll have a proper understanding of what we’ll be saying in this review.

Are you ready to be well informed? Let’s do this!

Who Can Wear The PetTech Dog Training Collar?

The PetTech Dog Training Collar is a training collar and so is meant to be worn by dogs on the recommendation of your professional dog trainer. This already excludes really young puppies, pregnant and lactating dogs, and even senior dogs. Also, really aggressive dogs shouldn’t wear this collar. Using this collar on really aggressive dogs could make them even more aggressive in an attempt to save themselves. If it has to be used on one, though, let it be in the hands of a professional dog trainer.

What Are The Features Of The PetTech Dog Training Collar?

The PetTech Dog Training Collar comes with the following features:

  1. A remote transmitter.
  2. A collar receiver.
  3. A collar strap.
  4. A charger.
  5. A  test light.
  6. A training manual.

1. Remote Transmitter

This remote transmitter is quite portable. It is a small thing that should fit well in your palm.

It has the capacity to control two collars. Now, the way to toggle between the two collars is using the button tagged ‘1/2’. Be sure that you know what collar is connected to what channel so that you don’t end up sending corrections to the wrong dog.

This collar uses 3 correction modes; warning beep, vibration, and static shock. The remote transmitter has a mode button which helps to switch between these modes.

Furthermore, there is a light mode. The reason we didn’t add this to the correction modes is that it doesn’t exactly serve as a deterrent. It is more a high visibility feature than anything. The fact that there is a separate light mode button kinda supports our argument.

There are two other buttons on the remote; one is tagged ‘+’ while the other is tagged ‘-‘. Those buttons are used to increase and decrease the intensity of the vibration and shock modes.

There are 100 levels available for each. PetTech recommends (and we totally agree) that you lay off the shock option. If you must use it, however, be sure it is with the help of a professional dog trainer.

Lastly, the antenna ensures that the signals actually get to the receiver. Knowing this, the remote can transmit to the collar receiver from a distance of 1,200 feet.

2. Collar Receiver

While the remote transmitter can easily control two collars, this Training Collar comes with only one collar receiver.

The collar receiver has a pair of prongs for the transmission of the static shock. Now, together with the package, you get two pairs of prong tips; one pair is rubber while the other pair is stainless steel.

The receiver is rechargeable, just like the transmitter, and so it has a charging port.

3. Collar Strap

This collar comes with two straps. One is made of TPU which is weather-resistant and adds to the overall waterproof quality of the collar.

Furthermore, this collar strap uses a metal buckle for a clasp. This buckle also doubles as the adjustment mechanism with adjustment holes.

The other is a nylon strap and uses a plastic buckle for a strap and a plastic tri-glide for adjustment. Now, while the nylon strap comes with a D ring, it is advised that you not lead your dog using it as it would put pressure on the prongs on the collar receiver.

Now here is something interesting. You can get this collar in 3 different colors; black, blue, and red. However, the TPU strap is a standard black.

4. Charger

This collar comes with its own charger, head, and cable. The table is double-pronged at the end, so you can charge the transmitter and the receiver at the same time.

5. Test Light

If you get this training collar, you’ll notice a small clear plastic thing with a little bulb inside. That small clear plastic thing is for you to test the shock option of the collar.

You’ll place it over the prongs and press the button to activate the shock mode. If the bulb lights up then the shock option works.

6. Training Manual

This collar comes with a training manual and PetTech stresses that you be sure to go through it before operating the collar.

Is The PetTech Dog Training Collar User-Friendly?

This collar is actually easy to operate. However, you should follow PetTech’s recommendations and actually go through the training manual.

Also, be sure that your veterinarian and/or dog trainer is in the know before getting your dog a shock collar. They should be the ones to have recommended this if possible.

Is The PetTech Dog Training Collar Good?

The PetTech Dog Training Collar is a great collar that works. It’s very easy to operate and the manual is detailed enough to give you all the steps you need to couple the collar together and use it effectively especially if you’re not tech-savvy. Besides that, the collar is waterproof which is a great addition that makes the collar very durable and usable even when you have to be around water. The PetTech Dog Training Collar also comes with spare prong tips and collar straps made from different materials which give you more options if your dog is allergic to one of the materials. Best of all, this collar comes with a lifetime guarantee.

What Are The Pros Of The PetTech Dog Training Collar?

1. Comes With A Lifetime Guarantee

It is sure a good thing that PetTech is so sure of its products that it is willing to stand by it for a lifetime. At least, you can be sure that if something goes wrong with the collar (especially due to no fault of yours), you’ll be getting a replacement.

2. It’s Easy To Use

We also like that this collar is easy to use. Plus, the training manual is detailed enough to help you through the coupling and usage if you are a newbie.

3. It’s Waterproof

Because this collar is waterproof, you can decide to use it in training your dog in and around water.

4. It Comes With Two Collar Straps

Having an extra something is always a good thing. This way, if your dog is allergic to one of the materials, you can just use the other. This also goes for the prong tips that come in a stainless pair and a rubber pair.

What Are The Cons Of The PetTech Dog Training Collar?

We would have preferred each correction had a separate button instead of cramming everything in one button and tagging it “mode.”

The way it is, you can’t quickly send a vibration correction if it is on the shock mode. You’ll have to switch before you can send and the moment might just pass.

PetTech Dog Training Collar FAQs

How Do You Sync The PetTech Dog Training Collar?

Here’s how to sync the collar with the remote transmitter:

  1. Press down the power button on the collar receiver until you hear a beep.
  2. After the green light blinks rapidly and steadies, press the Y button on the remote transmitter.
  3. When the receiver and transmitter sync, the receiver will vibrate.
  4. The collar has now been successfully synced.

How Do You Use A PetTech Dog Training Collar?

There are four navigation buttons on the PetTech Dog Training Collar.

  • The upward-facing button turns on the light on the remote transmitter.
  • The left-facing button helps you switch between collars if you have more than one collar synced to the remote transmitter.
  • The downward-facing button helps you choose from four modes of correction: a red light, a sound, vibration, and a shock.
  • The right-facing button helps you activate the mode that you have selected.

My Pettech Dog Training Collar Is Not Working

If your Pettech Dog Training Collar is not working, check, first of all, that the collar receiver and remote transmitter are correctly paired. Also, if you have more than one collar synced to the remote transmitter, ensure that you’re on to the right channel by toggling the left button on the remote transmitter. Again, confirm that the battery is not flat or bad. If it is, then change or replace it.

If none of these work, Pettech has a lifetime guarantee. You can reach out to the manufacturer and get another unit.

Do Professional Dog Trainers Use Shock Collars?

Many professional dog trainers frown on using shock collars to train dogs and find them cruel. However, there are some who do not consider it cruel if used reasonably. There are professional dog trainers who say that they would only use a shock collar if that’s the last resort to keep a dog safe. For teaching commands, though, most professionals agree that a shock collar is not a good idea.

Do Shock Collars Make Dogs More Aggressive?

According to research, the use of shock collars can actually make some dogs react aggressively. As a result of anxiety caused by the shock collar, some dogs might get aggressive and transfer this aggression to humans, other dogs, and other pets in the same space as them. This is just one more argument against the use of shock collars.

How Old Should A Dog Be Before Using A Training Collar?

6 months is the minimum age your dog should be before introducing him to a training collar. You can also introduce your dog to a training collar at 5 months but if you do, hold off from administering correction just yet. Simply let him wear the collar and get used to having it on his neck.

Nevertheless, it’s always best to hold off introducing your dog to a training collar until it is absolutely needed. Positive reinforcement is a better mode of training. If you can’t successfully carry that out yourself, you can always consult a professional dog trainer.
