Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate — Extensive Review

Precision Pet "ProValu," Single Door Dog Crate

Bringing you the Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate is the brand, Petco, a company which specializes in pet speciality products.

This company has an aim to provide pet products that are of value to you and your pet.

As of now, Petco has hundreds of different pet products which are supposed to help you keep your pets fit and engaged physically, mentally, socially and otherwise.

Well, let us now see how engaged the Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate gets your pet.

Who Is The Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate For?

When it comes to dog crates you need to be super careful. Just because a crate is made of metal doesn’t mean that it will stand up to your pup’s antics.

In the light of that “epiphany”, here’s what we think. This crate is good and we’re sure Petco tried its best to make it as high quality as possible. In truth, the crate is actually quite sturdy and appears to be well made.

However, we cannot confidently say that this crate will keep your pet contained no matter what. It’s a kind of crate that an escape artist will find a way around.

And this is in spite of the fact that Petco actually added some hooks to the door to ensure that it remains closed. Any dog can chew those hooks and just break out of the crate.

Now, still we have to give this brand some credit, this crate is quite sturdy. And it will definitely last even with some dogs with a decently rambunctious attitude.

So, while we’d advise you to get another dog crate, if you want this particular one so badly, we suggest that you reinforce the door the moment you get it.

Features Of The Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate

1. Metal Construction

This is a wire dog crate so it’s made of metal. But the problem is that we still haven’t found a brand that does super awesome in the sturdiness of its crate.

Well, that might be a little expected since manufacturers are in a tight spot. They have to make a high-quality crate that can still be folded as well. It’s not as easy as it seems.

But whatever be the case, the truth is that this crate is a little flimsy. It might work for some dogs, though, and they might not be able to break through it. Not because the crate is tough but because the dog is a bit docile.

An energetic dog will be able to bend this crate and possibly break out of it.

So, for construction, Petco tried its best, but that best could have been better.

And of course to keep the crate rust-free, the crate makers gave the Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate an electro-coat finish in black. That helps to ensure that your crate remains rust-free and durable.

2. Single Door

This comes with just one door. So, of course, there’s going to be a bit of inconvenience using this. But then again, it could help you deal with an escape artist so he doesn’t get too many ideas.

But like we said, you might experience a bit of an inconvenience finding just the right spot to place the crate. Also, running simple crate chores might also be a bit challenging.

Anyway, to what we really want to talk about – security. Just how secure is the door?

Well, to give credit where it is due, Petco made an effort to make the door as secure as possible. So, they fitted the door with hooks in a bid to beef up security.

The latch does require a learning curve, though, and some customers found it between mildly inconvenient to kinda frustrating to learn to close the door.

It wasn’t exactly intuitive which makes us ask: “should locking your dog’s crate ever be that hard?”

Well, we guess they did what they had to… but here’s the problem…

Those hooks also double as fantastic chew toys. And dogs have chewed on that stuff, making the once impenetrable door a complete thoroughfare.

So, on this count, the Petco ProVolu Single-Door Dog Crate fails the test. We’re sorry.

So, if you insist on getting this crate, then you must make sure that your pet isn’t a skilled escape artist.

3. Foldable

As usual, the crate comes foldable with a handle for carrying, too. This crate does fold really easily and pretty fast, too.

So, you shouldn’t have any problems folding it down or setting it up – even if you have arthritic fingers.

And because this crate is foldable, it makes a great travel crate. And it’s also very easy to store as well since it won’t take up so much space.

4. Dividing Panels Included

Sure there is a dividing panel for every size of the Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate. So, for pet parents with puppies, it will be the best idea for you to get a crate in your pup’s adult size.

And then, using the dividing panels, you can manage the space in the crate till it’s just the right size for your now adult dog.

5. Removable Propylene Pan

It’s adorable that Petco calls the propylene pan free. Like why is that even on the table? Every crate should normally come with a pan for accidents and stuff. It’s like a given, everyone does that.

So, in case you’re a newb, don’t let that marketing gimmick fool you. It’s not an extra value. It’s part of what you’re supposed to get with your crate normally.

Anyway, this is plastic, and so, naturally, we do not trust the strength of this crate. It most likely won’t last. We’re just letting you know.

Pros Of The Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate

1. Relatively sturdy and durable.

2. Big and spacious unit.

3. Very easy to set up and fold down.

Cons Of The Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate

1. There were a few isolated complaints about sharp edges around the crate. Since it’s not unanimous, it might not be a general thing. But all the same, it’s still best to err on the side of caution and inspect your crate upon arrival just to be sure.

2. The door latch isn’t the easiest thing to work with and will require some getting used to.

3. There are dogs that will easily break through this crate. It could be a bit too flimsy for some dogs.

4. The hooks installed on this crate to make the crate more secure could easily get chewed off thereby rendering them useless.

5. The plastic pan included feels somewhat flimsy and doesn’t look like it will last

6. Some customers complained about the door being way too small for their dog.

Midwest as a brand is quite popular among pet parents as you can tell from the thousands of mixed reviews it gets on different platforms.

This crate is quite affordable and with a decent level of quality. You could even say that it shares about the same level of quality with our featured product. So, naturally, both of them suffer the same drawbacks.

But if you could live with the drawbacks of our featured product, then you can definitely live with the Midwest iCrate Folding Metal Dog Crate. And for less bucks, too.

Heavy Duty Option – The LuckUp Heavy Duty Dog Crate

LUCKUP Heavy Duty Dog Cage Strong Metal Kennel and Crate for Medium and Large Dogs, Pet Playpen with Four Wheels,Easy to Install,38 inch,Silver …

Desperate times call for desperate measures as is often quipped. In the same vein, aggressive dogs call for aggressive crating techniques.

So, it follows that if you have an aggressive breed that has defied regular wire crating, it’s time to step up to a heavy-duty unit.

And that’s why we recommend the LuckUp Heavy Duty Dog Crate. Instead of tiny metal wires, this comes with steel bars that are about half an inch thick.

Customers have good reports about this crate. And the locks on the crate seem to do a pretty good job keeping Houdini pets properly contained.

It’s a bit high end, but that is to be expected considering what this crate is supposed to do. Plus, the quality and construction of this crate are solid stuff, too.

But just before you run out to get this, you might still need to do a bit of work on this crate before the crate becomes completely perfect.

Many customers who got this crate did the same thing. A little reinforcement here and there, some adjustments as well. But it was worth it in the end for most.

It is a soft crate, so, we definitely do not recommend this for dogs that chew. But besides that, this crate is okay.

The material of the crate cover and the zipper, too, could be of higher quality, but at this price point, you basically get what you pay for.

This crate folds very easily and is quite lightweight which makes it easy to move around. Plus, it comes in different sizes as well, so, you will find a crate in the size of your dog.

PS: If you really want this to last, then limit your use of this thing to light usage. And try not to take the cover to the machine all the time too.

What Customers Are Saying About The Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog Crate

Okay, so, the reactions to this crate are kinda like a mixed bag. There are reasons customers love this crate, and reasons they are not so obsessed about the crate, too.

We’ll begin with the fact that this crate is quite easy to set up and fold down. And because of the convenience, we definitely have a lot of customers singing its praises for that reason.

Also it’s quite clear that many dogs favor this crate. It’s spacious. It’s roomy. They don’t have to hunch while in their crate and they can also stretch their legs comfortably.

And once your dog is happy, you can hardly have any reason to complain.

So, yeah, customers commend the roominess of this crate. (Well, some dogs did have to hunch to get into the crate, though).

The construction aspect of this crate though is where things start to get a little ugly. How do we mean?

Some customers have complained about unfiled edges sticking out at different points in the crate. So, many had to file down those edges. This wasn’t a unanimous complaint, though, the complaint about the security of this unit was.

It’s obvious this crate isn’t really keeping a lot of energetic dogs contained because this complaint was quite commonplace.

Some dog parents were good with some minor repairs to the crate, though. Others are still watching to see if this will eventually be worth their while.

Our Verdict

Ultimately, the choice is yours but since you asked…

Once you realize the fact that wire dog crates weren’t made with big, rambunctious dogs in mind, you’ll be a much smarter crate buyer.

For the purpose of the Petco ProValu Single-Door Dog crate, therefore, we will say the crate isn’t too bad.

Don’t ditch the idea altogether just because of the drawbacks, especially if your dog is crate-trained and well behaved. Why? Because those are the target dogs for this crate.

Your large, bounding dog needs a heavy-duty crate.

That said, we can’t be completely honest if we don’t mention that the construction quality of this is quite subpar.

There’s so much flimsiness going on around this crate. And for the price, we feel like the customer deserves more.

And dang, it’s just a single door, why so pricey?

But hey, like we say, the ball has always been in your court.
