If It Barks Martingale Collar — Detailed Review

If It Barks - 1.5" Martingale Collar for Dogs - Adjustable - Nylon - Strong and Comfy - Ideal for Training - Made in USA - Large, Spunky

The If It Barks Martingale Collar is a product of a dog product company referred to as If It Barks. If It Barks is a North Carolina based company that was created in the year 2002.

This company was created by Nicole Robbins when she realized that her dogs, Nutmeg and Oswald, needed special collars because of their features. If It Barks produces such things as leashes, collars, and tags. However, it claims that martingale collars are its specialty.

All its products are hand sewn with a ‘design your own’ option that allows you to order a collar with specificities that are peculiar to your dog.

Now on to the collar…

Is The If It Barks Martingale Collar For All Dogs?

Due to the sizes available, the If It Barks Martingale Collar would appear to be made with large dogs in mind. Dog parents with smaller breeds might have to look elsewhere, although, there is the option for custom fitting where you can input your dog’s specific neck size.

In addition, this is a wide collar, so, it is for dogs with necks that are larger than their heads.

What Are The Features Of The If It Barks Martingale Collar?

Here are the features of the If It Barks Martingale Collar:

  • Made with thin nylon webbing and double grosgrain ribbon.
  • Stitched edges.
  • Clasp
  • Metal tri-glide.
  • Metal D-ring for attaching a leash.

1. Material

This collar is made of a combination of materials; thin nylon webbing and double grosgrain ribbon. This makes the collar strong and durable. In fact, If It Barks says this collar is made to “military specifications”.

Now, despite being this strong, this collar is pretty comfortable. Also, the edges of this collar are properly stitched and so the collar isn’t expected to fray or even get caught on hair.

2. Design

Like all martingale collars, this collar is made up of two loops. The larger loop is what goes around your dog’s neck while the smaller loop is what determines how tight the collar can get (you really should read this review on training collars). Both the loops are made of the exact same material.

This collar is hand-stitched. So we can be hopeful that detailing has gone into its production. And If It Bark says it will replace anything that goes bad as a result of regular wear.

This collar has no problem with being washed. So feel free to toss it in the washer or wash it by hand if it gets dirty. The color does not bleed and the collar itself does not look any worse after wash.

One thing though! Because this is a martingale collar, it should not be used to tie dogs to polls or any such thing. A dog can choke on a martingale that’s used as a tie out. Your dog should also not wear this collar unsupervised for the same reason.

This collar comes in a number of colors. And the only things remotely resembling design on this collar are the colored stripes it has going on.

3. Clasp, Tri Glide, And D Ring

As regards the clasp, you have two options. You could either get the one with a clasp or the one without. The one with a clasp uses a plastic buckle that you must have operated before and so will have no issues operating.

The one without will be slipped down the wearer’s head like that. You can adjust it so that it is large enough to slip through your dog’s neck and still be OK around his neck. And seeing as you are most likely going to use this collar on a dog whose neck is larger than his head, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Now that we are on the subject of adjustment, the metal tri-glide is what is responsible for that. It glides along easily, so that also shouldn’t be a problem.

The D Ring is also metal. It is slightly heavier than the tri-glide because that’s what you attach your leash to. When you pull on the leash, the smaller loop constricts and the collar tightens. This is how it serves as a training collar.

Is The If It Barks Martingale Collar User-Friendly?

If you have handled a martingale collar before, you shouldn’t have any issue working with the If It Barks Martingale Collar. In fact, even if you haven’t, using this collar is pretty intuitive, so, no problem there.

However, seeing as this collar is a training collar and so sensitive, you might want to ask a more experienced dog parent (or your vet or your dog trainer) for help if you find yourself in a fix.

If It Barks Martingale Collar FAQs

Is The If It Barks Martingale Collar Good For Dogs?

The If It Barks Martingale Collar is one of the best martingale collars on the market for dogs. It comes with superior quality and the fact that it is customizable is a huge bonus. Moreover, this collar is made to military specifications so there’s no doubt that it will last.

It does cost a pretty penny, though. However, for those who can afford this collar, you can rest assured that there won’t be any buyer’s regret.

What Is A Martingale Collar Used For On A Dog?

Martingale collars were initially used for dogs with necks thinner than their small heads so that they couldn’t back out of their collars. However, now, they are mostly used for leash training for dogs with a pulling problem and are generally considered more humane than choke collars.

Martingale collars come with two loops, one that goes around the neck and a smaller loop to which the leash is attached. When the dog pulls, the smaller loop tightens which causes the main loop to tighten as well. However, unlike with regular collars, the pressure is distributed evenly around the neck. This delivers the corrective measure without the choking effect.

Can A Dog Wear A Martingale Collar All The Time?

A dog should not wear a martingale collar all the time or even unsupervised for a short time as it is not safe.

Martingale collars have that tightening effect which presents a choking hazard when a dog wears one unsupervised. The collar could get caught on a piece of clothing or furniture, for instance, which could cause choking when your dog struggles to break free.

For regular, stay-at-home purposes, it’s better to get your dog a properly-fitted, regular flat collar.

Can A Dog Get Out Of A Martingale Collar?

The original idea for martingale collars was to prevent dogs with small heads and thinner necks from backing out of their collars. If your dog has that problem, then a martingale collar is the collar to consider. With this collar, your dog will not be able to get out of his collar.

Are Martingale Collars Safe For Small Dogs?

Martingale collars are completely safe for small dogs as long as they are used rightly.

Firstly, you must make sure you get a collar in your dog’s size. If it’s too tight, you risk your pup choking. Secondly, make sure you only use this collar when walking your dog with a leash. Again, this is to prevent the risk of choking.

How Do You Get A Martingale Collar Off?

To get a martingale collar off, undo the side buckle, if your collar comes with one, and remove it from your dog’s neck.

If your collar does not come with a buckle, simply loosen the control loop first. After that, loosen the main loop on your dog’s neck. Then remove the collar from his neck.
