Remember we said that beef is the key ingredient in this meal? Well, aside from the fact that Blue Buffalo tagged it a ‘Red Meat Meal’, the fact that beef appeared first on the list alluded to its importance.
Having beef as the primary ingredient in a high protein meal is really as close as it gets to your dog’s typical diet.
However, the fact that it says more beef was used than every other ingredient doesn’t exactly mean that your dog will get all the protein they need from the beef.
Why?
Just like every other animal protein, beef has a high water content; we are looking at between 60% and 70% water content as against other nutrients.
So, while it might be true that a lot of beef was used, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the meal is high protein.
For this meal to live up to its claim of being high protein, it will have to contain other protein sources, primarily animal-based.
Turkey
Things are certainly looking up with this Blue Buffalo Red Meat Recipe. Having turkey as the next ingredient is sure a good sign.
Like beef, we already know that it’s not all the turkey that is protein; a good portion of it is carbohydrate.
But judging from the fact that turkey is the second ingredient with the highest quantity, we can begin to rest easy that this is truly a high protein meal.
Beef Broth
If this were a dry food, we wouldn’t be seeing this particular ingredient. This is because beef broth (or any kind of broth for that matter) is majorly added for its water content.
It is also added to make the meal more palatable much like we do with our own meals.
Now, beef broth doesn’t do much as regards provide nutrients. But it is definitely an important ingredient in making wet food.
It is kinda like killing two birds with one stone; you get the water that is needed to make the food wet and the spices in the broth that make the food tasty (at least we think).
Lamb

This one has three which is definitely more impressive.
That said, be sure that your dog is all for lamb because they’ll definitely taste it in this one.
That’s all the animal protein sources in this meal and we like that they are all high up on the list.
Maybe we would have liked for one animal protein source that is more of protein than of meat but we can’t complain too much.

Potatoes
In a good number of grain-free dog foods, you’ll find potatoes as one of the ingredients. Potatoes are used as a substitute for grains and they are pretty inexpensive to source.
Now, aside from being a healthy source of carbohydrates (which your dog needs for energy), potatoes contain a healthy amount of fiber. And fiber is necessary for proper digestion and smooth bowel movement.
Potatoes also contain a healthy amount of protein and potassium; potassium which is necessary for maintaining cardiovascular health and a healthy blood pressure.
Pea Protein
It’s usually not good news if a dog food is saturated with plant protein sources.
Plant protein isn’t as good a protein source as animal protein as the former doesn’t contain all the amino acids that dogs need.
However, it is alright to have plant protein in your dog’s meal to augment the other protein sources.

We honestly do not know why this still makes it into dog foods. We are especially surprised that Blue Buffalo added this to their food because Blue Buffalo has been known to be really careful about the kind of ingredients it uses.
We did a little bit of research, and to be honest, there wasn’t really any positive thing that anybody had to say.
Carrageenan is added to wet dog foods basically to serve as a thickener; that is, with carrageenan in a meal, it won’t be watery or runny.
That said, carrageenan doesn’t have any nutritional value which isn’t a huge deal.
Some ingredients are added to meals for a reason that has nothing to do with nutritional value (broth and natural flavors, for instance).
However, carrageenan has a couple of negative effects which we are not here for.
Carrageenan has been known to cause some gastrointestinal issues and even cancer in dogs and humans.
Some manufacturers have argued that the trick is in the quantity and the quantity they put in is safe. But we are still wary.
Cassia Gum
Cassia gum is a classic example of additives that have no nutritional value but are, thankfully, also not destructive.
Like carrageenan, cassia gum is used as a thickening agent in a lot of pet foods. Some have said that if cassia gum degenerates by any chance, it becomes sugar which isn’t a terrible idea.
Guar Gum
Another additive added to pet food as a thickener and emulsifier. However, guar gum actually has a number of nutritional benefits.
It contains dietary fiber which will help your dog pass out waste even easier. Dietary fiber is also instrumental to proper digestion.
Aside all that, guar gum also makes a dog more glucose tolerant and reduces their cholesterol levels.
Potassium Chloride
Finally, we look at potassium chloride. Potassium chloride is a nutrient that can be gotten from a number of foods including the potatoes we mentioned earlier.

It contains a decent amount of both animal and plant protein with a decent reliance on animal protein.
We think it tastes good, too; not because we’ve tasted it, of course, but because it contains beef broth.
