BestPets Wire Dog Crate – A Complete Review

BestPet 42" Pet Folding Dog Cat Crate Cage Kennel w/ABS Tray LCBefore we take a look at the BestPets Wire Dog Crate, let’s talk a little about the brand responsible for it — BestPets.

BestPets is an online retail platform — not exactly a manufacturer — that carries all kinds of pet products.

We visited the site and found that it was pretty easy to navigate. The brand also appears to have a great variety of products for every category of pets that it attends to.

But we’re here for the review of its BestPets Wire Dog Crate, so let’s get straight to it.

Who Is The BestPets Wire Dog Crate For?

The BestPets Wire Dog Crate comes in the 48-inch size which means that it is best for large breed dogs.

From what we can see, this is a pretty tall unit. A bit taller than the regular large-sized dog crates you find around.

So, if you need a crate that is going to be comfy for your large breed and other crates haven’t worked, this crate just might.

However, it is still somewhat flimsy as BestPets seems to have skimped on that aspect. If your dog is large and rambunctious, he will destroy this crate easily.

Escape artists, too, will easily escape from this crate too. The locks are not entirely bust-proof.

But for large and docile dogs, this will do. Crate-trained dogs will also find the crate secure enough.

Features Of The BestPets Wire Dog Crate

1. Foldable

The BestPets is a foldable unit just like your average wire dog crate these days.

So, this crate can be folded down if you need to move it around. It doesn’t just make a good house crate, it also makes a good travel crate as well.

Setting this up is also pretty easy, too.

2. Material

The BestPets Wire Dog Crate is made of low carbon steel wire. It doesn’t make for a very strong crate, though.

Like we already mentioned, this isn’t the strongest unit we’ve come across in a long time. And this disturbs us because it’s supposed to be for large breeds.

We all know that large breeds are known for their rambunctiousness. So, why this wasn’t made with a stronger material really gets us worried.

We would have thought that this being strictly for large dogs, BestPets would have made this crate a bit stronger.

So, that said, you’d be smarter to restrict your use of this crate to a crate-trained, well-behaved dog.

But hey, at least BestPets does the needful and finishes the crate with an electro-coat finish.

This will keep your crate as durable as possible for as long as possible. That is if your energetic dog doesn’t break the crate first.

3. Propylene Pan Included

To keep it easy to clean, this crate comes with a propylene pan. The pan is very easy to clean and promises to be quite durable.

However, it’s still a propylene pan and will definitely not be as durable as a metal pan.

And if we do not trust the structural integrity of its wire crate that is made of metal, how can we trust its plastic pan?

It’s just common sense, isn’t it?

Thankfully, there is an option for a metal pan. Although a customer complained that she received a plastic pan after ordering for the crate with a metal pan.

Now, if metal pans bother you so much for their toughness and coldness, you could fit a dog bed into the crate to make it more comfy.

4. Double Doors

Double doors make this crate very convenient to work with. There’s one at the front and the other at the side. There’s no top door but, at least, two doors can never be a bad thing.

It’s easier for you and your pet. You’ll easily access your dog and the crate with two doors. And your dog can even use one for entry and the other for exit.

It also makes this crate convenient to place in any space in your house since there are two doors.

5. Available Size

The BestPets Wire Dog Crates comes in 3 sizes, the 36 inches, 42 inches, and the 48 inches (the one on review).

This makes this crate really great for all kinds of dog breeds between the intermediate and large dog breed size.

Pros Of The BestPets Wire Dog Crate

1. Really large and spacious unit.

2. Relatively affordable.

3. Very easy to set up and fold down.

4. Light enough for convenient travel.

5. Comes with double doors.

Apparently, Bestpets also makes heavy duty dog crate units as well in the large size. So, if you need a really heavy-duty unit, then check this out.

It is actually a tad bit expensive, though. But that’s to be expected because BestPets actually uses the really pretty tough steel on this crate.

The steel bars are actually half an inch thick in diameter quite unlike the flimsy metal wire the brand chose to use on the BestPets Wire Dog Crates.

The lock is also quite heavy-duty, too.

But does this crate actually work for its purpose?

Well, for one, the locks could be better. It isn’t as heavy-duty as advertised. But as for the construction, it is high quality and well done.

Just be sure to reinforce the locks once this gets to you.

Yeah, it does come with wheels, too, to make the crate easily moveable. And two of them are lockable to keep the crate safe and secure for your pooch.

Dog Crate For Small Breeds – The Go Pet Club Soft Crate

If you need a smaller crate for a small dog breed, then check out the Go Pet Club Soft Crate. It comes only in a 28-inch size, so, it’s specifically made for small breeds.

Now, this is a soft crate, so, you need to be super careful with this one. It is not for every dog.

Small dogs aren’t exactly known to be rambunctious but that does not mean that there are no rambunctious small breeds.

Also, small breeds can also be chewy. And since this is a soft crate, a small breed can definitely chew this to bits if you don’t use this under supervision.

You can also use this crate as a travel crate. But here’s something, though.

Even for a soft crate, this crate is somewhat flimsy. We’ve come across sturdier soft crates.

So, try to limit your use of this crate to light usage. Maybe for once in a  while usage. But that’s all.

But for travel, though, this crate works awesome. It comes with a handle and carrying cases as well.

If you’re big on getting a metal pan in your crate, here is the SmithBuilt Portable Dog Crate.

Since there are no options for the plastic or metal pan, you’re always sure to get a metal pan with your crate.

The metal pan is quite durable, and it cleans very easily without retaining any odor or stains. So, yep, it does help to keep your crate in sanitary conditions.

Now to other aspects of this crate…

Well, it comes in a beautiful silver finish – one of our favorite characteristics of this crate.

Plus, it’s lightweight which also makes it really convenient for travel.

This isn’t super strong, though, like most regular wire dog crates. So, we won’t advise you to use this crate for pets that aren’t crate-trained.

But for well-trained, non-chewy dogs, this crate should work, at least for the most part.

Hard-sided dog crates are mostly made for reclusive pets. So, this crate is naturally for shy dogs.

However, as we said, this isn’t a crate for chewy and aggressive dogs as well.

Plastic is very chewy and easy to break for most breeds.

But for regular dogs, this crate actually does have some serious benefits. The most major one is that it comes with a divider panel.

This isn’t very common with plastic crates. So, for this reason, this crate really impresses us.

But besides the divider panel, this crate is lightweight, and in most cases, it is great for airline travel.

Just be sure to check with your airline first before you decide to use this on your next trip.

What Customers Are Saying About The BestPets Wire Dog Crate

All customers seem to be saying the same thing about the BestPets Wire Dog Crate.

They all agree that this crate is large and spacious enough. However, the universal consensus is that this unit isn’t sturdy. Like, at all.

Many dog owners found that the crate didn’t last especially for rambunctious dogs.

But, at least, many were able to fit even two dogs comfortably into the unit. It’s really spacious.

Well, other pros customers mentioned include that this crate is very easy to set up and fold down.

However, the main attraction for customers, as we observed, remains the size of this crate.

On many other aspects, though, customers seem to be of the opinion that BestPets skimped on so many things. Even the included pan is not durable at all.

Some customers found that the pan broke after a short while of usage – the plastic pan, that is.

So, generally, customers aren’t counting on this crate for its strength. But they find it comfy enough for their pooch.

Plus, the fact that this crate is lightweight means that it’s also convenient to carry around.

Our Verdict

We are so disappointed with the strength of this crate. It is not at all strong, especially because it is supposed to be for large dogs who are known to be energetic and aggressive.

It seems that the only thing going for this crate is its spaciousness. The crate is one big, spacious unit.

So, in that respect, it is suited for a large breed. But other than that, there are just too many drawbacks to deal with this crate.

So much flimsiness…

The plastic pan is flimsy and the locks aren’t exactly wonderful.

But at least the crate comes with double doors and is light enough for convenient travel.

Besides that, we are almost tempted to say that this crate is totally crappy.
